Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room: each of these album covers are fuckin sweet. That being said, it’s true: Consult any random metal forum, and they’ll be talking about these albums, and the fact that all these bands are from the state of Georgia. Mastodon, Kylesa, Harvey Milk and Baroness are all the rage. Pitchfork media has given every single one of these albums (with the exception of Kylesa’s self-titled album, which wasn’t popular enough at the time to get their attention but was later hailed) at LEAST an 8 out of 10. They’ll only go out of their way to do that for metal if they think it’s part of some kind of movement. So are they good? Give it a listen. This isn’t Cannibal Corpse or Obscura or Mayhem or Lamb of God type stuff. This is supposedly the second coming of Sabbath. But aside from being “sludgy” and bluesy and getting-your-face-ground-into-the-dirt filthy, they are exciting. I mean, this is stuff I can get excited over because there is a certain amount of diversity, there is the classic metal signatures and riffs, but there is also modern production value and cool guitar peddles and grinding vocals. It’s like “bummer, but on the other hand, this solo kills!”
